(Almost) 50 Shades of Grey for under $50

A week ago I  downloaded the 50 Shades of Grey audiobook on my iphone  to help make my 7+ hour road trip to Orange Country a bit more bearable. Everywhere I went I kept hearing about this book that was becoming a cultural phenomenon. In summary the audiobook is HORRIBLE-  I can and can't believe this book has sold over 20+ million copies to date. The story is pure (or dirty) fantasy at it's apex. Imagine... gorgeous young successful billionaire goes after a 22 year old virgin to become his sex slave but her  sweetness and "smart mouth" causes him to fall in love with her and after a few short months he proposes with a "oval diamond in a platinum ring".  I haven't read the third book in the trilogy but I  bet there is no mention of a prenup.

Anyways, despite the book's shortcomings it was my inspiration for today's blog post: 50 Shades of Grey for Under $50. All clothing and accessories featured below is under $50. I could imagine Anastasia Grey wearing  some of the clothing below but obviously it  would have had to been before she was introduced to Mr. Grey and his personal shopper at Neiman's.

Cheapest Wedding Ever

Nine months ago I got "married" in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It was a fabulous destination wedding weekend. I had three different dresses for three different events, we flew two photographers to shoot for four consecutive days, had three course dinners served, a jazz duo, two wedding planners running around to make sure every detail was perfect, etc. -basically everything and more that I wanted in a beach wedding. It was a beautiful wedding and I truly understand the phrase "the most happiest day of your life". But even though I got "married" I didn't really get "married" in the legal sense.  So after nine blissful newlywed months my husband and I finally booked an online appointment at the San Francisco city hall so we could really get "Married".

The entire process was really quick and efficient. Total time to obtain a marriage license and a civil ceremony was 60 minutes and it cost about $180. I borrowed the dress, already had the shoes and accessories, and did my own hair and makeup. Quick city hall civil ceremonies only let you have 2 witnesses so we only had one. My friend Uma was our witness and our amateur photographer. Instead of a lavish reception my husband, Uma, and I got blue bottle coffee and chatted outside of city hall. Our $180 wedding made me reflect on the entire wedding process and made me realize that the most important thing about a wedding is the "union" itself. The reception, wedding dress, bridesmaids, photographers, and everything else is just rich icing on the cake.

Laura Mercier's Best Selling Tinted Moisturizer to Go

One of my splurges is Laura Mercier's oil free tinted moisturizer. I obviously am a fan if I'm willing to pay $43 for a 1.5 ounce tube of this stuff.  I recently read that even  Kate Middleton swears by this product.  Laura Mercier now has this product in a compact. Same formula but just to go -perfect for air travel and the occasional running late to work must do my makeup in the car morning.

The full size compact is currently selling at  Sephora but this week only they are giving away a deluxe sample of the compact with the code: COMPACT with the purchase of $25.

Lauramercier.com is also having a mini sale on their site. It's not that impressive but they have a few items (lipsticks, eyeshadows, etc.) for 30% off. Click here for details.

My Cheaps of the Weeks in Photos

Living the city girl chic moto isn't always easy -especially when I'm (STILL) on vacation and there are so so many opportunities to spend LOTs of money throughout my waking day. Below some of my cheaps of the week illustrating I can still occupy myself without spending a ton.

Sunday (8/5): FREE concert at Stern Grove. My girlfriends and I brought a picnic and we burned calories by dancing to Ozomatli for a few hours.

Tuesday (8/7): Used my slow cooker to make carnitas for dinner. All I really had to do was prepare the salsa and guacamole. Rick Bayless's Garlicy Carnitas Slow Cooker Sauce ($2.65) took care of the rest.

Wednesday (8/8): Reading at the beach. Thankfully there are no meters at Crissy Fields so this beautiful beach excursion was free.

Thursday (8/9): I have been a bit obsessed with bola tea. I always smirk inside (and outside) when I have to order "big balls".  This makes me happier than coffee ($1.99 @ Sheng Kee Bakery).

Friday (8/10): If you haven't signed up for UrbanDaddy.com then you are missing out. Urbandaddy.com mimics (in virtual form) the popular friend that knows all the hot spots, amazing events, and new places. Thanks to this site I was able to see a screening of Francis Ford Coppola's new movie Twixt. I not only saw the movie but the legendary director (who also wrote and produced the movie) was on hand to introduce the movie and answer questions after the movie. Price for this sold out screening: $15.

I took a photo of the outfit I wore to the movie. Dress was borrowed (thanks Sharon), studded clutch is from TopShop ($75), neon yellow belt is from Joe Fresh ($9), aersoles wedges ($40), and Sinful blue nail polish ($2).

My first purchase from Gilt.com arrived this week. This canvas picture  by Parvez Taj is massive it's 60"by 40''. I'm pretty proud that I hung this wall art all by my short self.  It retails most places for $650 but I got it for $199. I have been looking for a piece for this wall for two years and I finally found it. Thankfully it looks amazing in our loft because it non-returnable :-/

Saturday (8/11): My husband and I did a day trip outside of San Francisco. We traveled to Healdsburg for some hot (90 degree) weather. After checking out the Sonoma County Fair (don't go!) and downtown Healdsburg we found Riverfront Regional Park in the middle of vineyards and took a nap. Parking for the day was $7, which is a steal considering some San Francisco meters charge $3.50 an hour.

The "Smash" Smoothie

Even though we cancelled our cable a few weeks ago ( a savings of $40+ a month) I seem to be watching more t.v. shows but not on our 55 inch flat screen. Instead I've been catching up on my shows and watching new shows on my evil little time sucking  Ipad. One of the shows I just finished was Smash on NBC.com. Smash is an American musical drama series revolving around a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. On a few of the later episodes Uma Thurman guest stars as a demanding hollywood actress who was going to be the lead Marilyn . One of her constant demands were for flax-seed kale coconut milk smoothies. It sounded like an interesting combination  so I was curious to try it....

My Version of the "Smash: Smoothie

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup kale (I personally like flat kale)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 tsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 scoop whey protein powder (optional)
Simply put all the ingredients together in a blender and blend.
What does it taste like? Well it taste very green. I think the coconut milk and banana definitely improve the flavor. I don't think this smoothie is for everyone but I kind of (stressing the kind of) like it and could make it a few more times. Maybe next time I'll add pineapple. Pineapple seems to improve the flavor of anything don't you agree?

Essential Fall: Peplum

Our fashion vocabulary word of the day is: Peplum. Peplum is a greek word for tunic and is defined as a "Short overskirt that is usually attached to a fitted jacket, blouse or dress". Peplum is a trending style that will continue into fall. One reason that the peplum style is so popular is because it works with so many different body types. On some it can help further accentuate your curves, on others it can actually give you curves, and on many the peplum shape can also hide unflattering areas. When shopping for a peplum of your own you have to look for styles that flares out in the spot where you are the skinniest and ends in the spot you are trying to conceal. Remember that not all peplums are created the same, some are slight while others are more exaggerated.
